What You Need To Know About Blepharitis

Have your eyes ever felt red and irritated - particularly near your eyelashes

? Perhaps this causes your eye to become swollen, itchy or burning, with crust build-up... These symptoms may narrow down your diagnosis to "blepharitis", and you may be experiencing just that! An inflammation in the eyelash follicles, this condition typically occurs along the edge of the eyelids, and can be extremely irritating. When a flare-up occurs, you may have a tendency to feel as though there is dust or sand grains inside your eyes; and your eyelashes may even fall out.

This eye condition may actually be broken down into two different types: anterior and posterior blepharitis. Typically when diagnosed with blepharitis, the two overlap a bit. However, anterior blepharitis is more commonly seen as it occurs specifically around the eyelashes and the eyelash follicles; posterior blepharitis affects the meibomian glands inside that are responsible for the oils within our eyes. Furthermore, both types can in turn be categorized into additional classifications. Anterior blepharitis can be broken down into three subcategories: staphylococcal, demodex, and seborrheic. While posterior blepharitis - often referred to as "meibomian", meibomitis or meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) - can also be comprised of Rosacea blepharitis.

The causes of blepharitis usually consist of an overgrowth of bacteria from underneath the skin. Several other well-known significant symptoms can also be a sign of this disease. For instance, if you tend to have constant, recurring sty attacks, it could be a possibility that you in fact have blepharitis. Another onset, as briefly discussed above, is rosacea. If you have some kind of rosacea, or suffer from other dermatitis problems of the face or scalp, or you have an onset of lice or an allergy build-up, you may develop blepharitis in turn. In fact, it is very typical that it doesnt come by itself, but in company with other facial hair, skin, and ocular conditions.

In an attempt to try and protect yourself from the onset of blepharitis, or If it is a known condition that you suffer from, there are ways to hold it at bay. Of course its important to take good general care of yourself, particularly the sensitive areas around your eyes. You can clean your eyelids carefully with a q-tip and some sort of special sensitive cleansers that will not upset the normal balance that your eyes require. However, should you already be diagnosed, or have a flare-up, particularly if there is an additional skin condition, medicinal treatment should be received from your doctor.

For those of you that generally wear contacts or prescription eyeglasses on a daily basis, whenever a blepharitis flare-up occurs, it is typically recommended that you ditch the contacts for awhile, and just wear your glasses. Contacts can add to the serious irritation that your eyes are likely already feeling, so in an effort to give them a bit of a break, wearing your glasses frames instead is a nice alternative to the continuous symptoms that blepharitis brings along.
