I built my first website before I knew what I was doing so let me pass on a few tips so that you can avoid some of the mistakes I made. First decide whether the site is for a private business or as an affiliate marketing home base.
If the website is for affiliate marketing then you need to be very selective of the Domain Name. Most people searching the web put in words that are called keywords. If they were searching for a weight loss program keywords could be, weight loss, lose weight, lose fat, slimming and so on.
These searches in Google are counted and listed by the number of searches per month. Very popular keywords have millions of queries per month while others might have very few and that is why people try to register a Domain with high value keywords in the name.
Competition is another factor to consider. In the case of " weight loss " keyword large companies with professional web builders and copywriters are competing with you to get a site on the first page in google.
In the case of a private business domain getting on the first page on google can be a lot easier as the business name will have little competition. If you cannot get your domain on the first three pages of google then your chances of having a successful site diminish.
Once you have your well researched domain name the next step is to select a company to host your site. You will need a large company that has moderate hosting fees and one that has a lot of free services like site builders. I use Hostgator as they have a 24 hour 7 day online help service and I need plenty of assistance.
If you can afford to have a site built for you by professionals it will save you a lot of worry and probably be a more successful operation. There are a lot of programs you can buy to assist in becoming a successful affiliate marketer, finding which ones will work could be difficult.
