What You Need to Know About Vacuum Repairs and Maintenance

Your vacuum cleaner is an important household appliance. It provides the power and structure you need to get the floors clean, remove heavy dirt and maintain the air quality as well as the quality of the carpet. The experts say that a reasonably priced vacuum with last as much as 8 to 10 years, although that may depend on the brand and the overall design. Vacuum repairs and maintenance play a major role in the longevity and overall quality of the equipment.

Types of Vacuum Cleaner

There are two main types of vacuums on the market today: the upright vacuum and the canister vacuum. You'll also find a handheld vacuum at the retailers, although this is generally just a smaller version of an upright.

Repairing and maintaining these two types of vacuums is different in some ways and identical in others. Both have a motor and both have a beater bar. They also both have an on/off switch. But the upright vacuum has a dirt fan and the canister type has a power head wire connector. These elements require different steps to maintenance and very distinct repairs.

All vacuums have a motor, although the location and size of that motor are often different. That motor will generally run for the life of the appliance with little care as long as it's not overworked. An overworked motor is one that runs in extreme conditions, such as overly hot temperatures. In certain circumstances motors can be repaired with a brush replacement.

If you cannot service the motor, for whatever reason, you will probably need to invest into a new vacuum since the cost of replacing a motor is quite high.

Maintaining the Major Parts with Minor Repairs

The larger, more complicated parts of a vacuum can be used for years with only minor vacuum repairs. Beater bars, for example, take a lot of abuse over the course of time. But when the belt snaps inside these dependable and essential parts of your vacuum will seize up. A quick replacement belt will have the beater bar up and running again.

The on/off switch needs to be tested if there is a problem with the electrical supply and the drive belt should be looked at every month or so. Using a multi-tester for the switch and through a visual check of the belts you should be able to count on your vacuum for many more years to come.
