What You Ought To Know About Farts.

Who farts more men or women? Whose farts are the more odious

? Both interesting questions but not if you are one of the thousands who suffer the pain of excess flatulence.

Most reasonably healthy adults will give off about half a liter of flatulence each day. Individuals can fart anywhere between 2 and 42 times each day with the average being just about 14 times.. There is no strong evidence to say which of the sexes fart more or which does more foul smelling farts. Variations in smell and volume tend not to have anything to do with gender.

The noise made by flatulence is made by vibrations of the anal opening. How noisy a fart is depends on how much gas there is and how quickly it is being expelled and also on the tightness of the anal sphincter.

A typical fart is composed of gases which come from 4 basic sources.. 1. The air that we swallow while eating or drinking. 2. Gas which seeps into our intestines from our blood. 3. Chemical reactions in our intestines. 4. Gas produced by bacteria in our intestines.

The actual chemical composition of gas varies from one person to another and is dependent on a great range of factors. The air we ingest while eating or drinking is composed mainly of oxygen and nitrogen. Most of the oxygen is absorbed early on, leaving mostly nitrogen. Chemical reactions within the intestine usually generate carbon dioxide. Additionally, methane and hydrogen are produced as a result of bacterial action.

These gases are the basic components of farts. The proportions of each gas will depend on a range of factors such as the amount of air we swallow, what types of bacteria we have in our intestines and in what quantities, how long we hold in the gas and, of course, what we eat.

Some scientists believe that our "capacity" to produce methane is genetic. This has yet to be proved.

The smell in farts is almost entirely due to bacterial influences. The odor is caused by the presence of small quantities of methane, mercapans and hydrogen. If your diet contains foods which are high in these substances then your flatulence will tend to be more pungent. Some typical foods to avoid are meat, eggs and cauliflower or any food which is high in insoluble fiber. Beans are inclined to produce less smelly flatulence but in greater amounts.

It is also a peculiarity of smelly flatulence to be warmer than non foul smelling ones.. Normal flatulence tends not to be foul smelling because they come from the air that we swallow and as we know this is made up of nitrogen and oxygen which are odorless and are expelled from the body in rather large bubbles and at body temperature. It is a very different story when bacteria are caught up in the action. When food lingers in the digestive system for a long time because the body is struggling to process it, it tends to be subject to a fermentation process which generates heat and awfully smelly small bubbles of gas.
