Another example of a popular filter is one that uses magnetic fields in filtration. The water passes through the field which causes the ions to rearrange. How effective this type of filter can be is debated because of the belief that any real and lasting change is minimal due to the fact that the ion is not split.

Ionized water is the result of what is known as an ion filter. The water is electronically altered by the use of positive and negative electrodes. This alteration results in the separation of the water an the minerals within into two types. The first is acidic water and the second is alkaline water. Acidic water is used for cleansing the body by means of taking a bath and is known for killing bacteria. Alkaline water is popular for drinking and is known to have detoxifying properties.

The reverse osmosis filtration system is another method that has gained popularity. It accomplishes purification of the water through a fine membrane that removes impurities in an osmotic process. This process leaves the water almost entirely pure, as it removes everything including what is considered good for you. Because of the fact that these filters requires skilled maintenance in order to periodically replace the membrane they are less common in their use.

Another method that has been used for filtration is ultraviolet light. It eliminates what bacteria is present in many sources of water. Most of the time it is used in hospital or business settings because of the cost of calling a professional to maintain it. Thus it is rarely found in a home setting.

Water filters come in variety of different types. Each is usually effective if used properly and in the proper circumstances as not all filters can be used in all settings. So do your homework and discover which one is right for your home, or your business.
