What Your Beer Says About You

Everybody has a favourite type of beer

Everybody has a favourite type of beer. Even if you dont stick to it religiously, there is usually one that you favour above the others. One that if you went in to the bottle shop and they had it on display, you would come out with a six-pack. But what does the type of beer you are drawn towards say about you? It might be more than you think.

To find out, it is necessary to examine what different types of beer there are. There are several categories of beer and beer drinker and each one has its own distinct personality.

Home brew

You can spot a home brewer a mile away. They have a certain look. Its somewhere between self-satisfaction and denial. Sure, theyre proud of their creation but deep down they know its easier to go to the store and pick up a crate. Yet, they just wont let themselves. Stubborn but resourceful, the home brewer deserves our respect if not our envy.

The big foreign imports

People drink big European lagers because they think it makes them look sophisticated, like they know what they are doing. In reality they dont. The only difference between this and a domestic lager is the language on the can and the price tag. This is hardly craft beer, after all. With a tendency to show off but underneath it all, decent folks, the imported beer brigade isnt too bad really.

Craft beer drinkers

Essentially, and without wanting to be too unkind, these folks are beer nerds. They have got so far into their beer they have almost lost sight of everything else. They are obsessives who relentlessly search for that elusive perfect beer. Unless youre willing to talk beer with them, its probably not worth it. Still, you have to admire their dedication.

Hipster beers

Youngsters with trendy haircuts, thick rimmed glasses and fixed gear bicycles. They drink the beers they have on tap at the cool bars. Nobody else has heard of them, of course, because they are so fresh and new. Most grow out of it but some graduate to full on craft beer drinking status.

Domestic and proud

The people that drink domestic beers are loyal and proud. It might not be the fanciest beer in the world but they like it and they dont care who knows it. You just try standing in the way of a domestic beer drinker and a nice cold one and see what happens.

The weirdos

There are some, and they arent too numerous thankfully, who like the strangest beers around. The beer abominations that pop up now and then in the pub for a few months and then disappear without a trace. But we all know someone who, for that short, period will drink nothing else.

Of course, as we grow up our tastes change. Most of us will pass through several of these stages through our lives - maybe without even realising it. Its all part of the glorious journey of being a beer drinker.
