What actually Causes Migraine Headaches?
The first ever migraine attack I got was when I was 15 years old. I was cycling down a hill in my home town. Without any warning I lost sight in both eyes and had an incredible pain shoot through my head at the same time. It was only good luck and somebody watching over me that stopped me crashing headlong into the traffic in front of me.
There was no warning. The migraine just struck. And this is how it starts for most people who get migraines - it comes right out of the blue. There are a lot of things that can trigger migraine headaches. The almost 30 million people who suffer from migraines in America alone gives you an idea of the size of this problem.
There are many reasons why people suffer from migraines. Causes of migraines in people can range from a side effect of medicine, food, or even stress. The pain is often preceded by warning signs, which can be blind spots, tingling, nausea or increased sensitivity to light and sound - these are called auras. Some migraine sufferers get no warning at all though - I've never suffered from visual auras. Now and again I'll get a bitter taste in my mouth just before a migraine starts.
The excruciating pain of a migraine can last for hours or even days and sometimes pain meds can't keep up. If you deal with migraines regularly, you will begin to notice the warning signs and start a process of stopping them.
Migraines are usually brought on because the blood vessels around the brain enlarge and the nerve fibers release chemicals around the large arteries in the brain. These chemicals then cause inflammation, pain, and further enlargement of the artery on the outside of the skull. This causes the nervous system to react by forcing on feelings of being nauseated, diarrhea, and vomiting. It also affects food absorption, decreases blood circulation and will increase sensitivity to light and sound. Sometimes people who are experiencing a migraine have to go in a completely dark and quiet room to have a semblance of relief (myself for example).
If you experience migraines on a regular basis, then it would be wise to talk to your family doctor about it. They'll be able to prescribe you with a painkiller strong enough to immediately alleviate the symptoms. Your doctor can also try to pinpoint the migraine's source. Sometimes it can be a lack of sleep, hormonal changes, lack of food or even continuing to use alcohol and tobacco. I've noticed a very definite decrease in my own migraines since I reduced my smoking habit to almost zero.
