What's Around Your Neck?
Here's an odd one. I was in my favorite pet store (actually the only one I go to) last week and I picked up a new collar for Riley, our Golden Doodle (a confused cross between a Golden Retriever and Poodle). At fifteen months, our 35 kg (75 lb) "puppy" had out grown the last collar , so I chose a cool looking soy product. "Made from 100% soy fiber, super durable and soft like cashmere." The product tag promised. "Doing good never felt so good." How green is that? Even my dog's collar is helping the environment.
Once I got home, I strapped the new collar on Riley and headed out for a walk. And this is where it got strange.
Normally, Riley is frisky, tugging on the lease and raring to go. This time his nose was down, close to the road, like he was following a sent. It took a few blocks to realize that it wasn't a sent he was following; it was the smell of the new collar! The scent was (quite literally) all around him and inescapable. The poor pooch obviously assumed it was a sent on the road and he was on a mission to find it. It's kind of like life. You have a problem; it's all encompassing, yet it can be impossibly frustrating to find the cure. In fact, we often chase after the wrong solution because we have so much trouble identifying the real issue that is
creating the dis-ease. It reminds me of a reoccurring issue in my business life.
I have spent the better part of three decades blaming my business growth for creating too much work for me. How ironic is that? I want the success, but blame it once it arrives.
I realize now that running around trying madly to keep up with the volume of work (that's the stinky collar around my neck) was never going to help. If fact, that's a sure way to burn out and kill the business. What I needed to recognize was that my outdated beliefs were actually at fault. Thinking I was the irreplaceable expert on everything was guaranteed to keep me in chains at my desk. What about for you?
Think of a problem that reoccurs in your life and then ask yourself this tough question: "What do I have to think differently to make a real, significant change?" Stay away from blame and look for the opposite way of thinking that got you into the problem in the first place.
