What's Next for Mobile Phones?
Looking at the mobile phones of the 80s, you'd never have been able to guess just how sleek and functional the handsets of today would be
. Mobile phones have come on a huge way since their initial launch in 1973 and you can do far more than just make a call on the move with today's models: so what's next for the feature-packed handsets of today?
Mobile phones were initially designed to allow people to make calls and communicate without being tethered to a landline or phone connection. The first mobile phones were large and heavy affairs, but they began to shrink when they became commercially available throughout the 80s. It was in the early 90s however, that the market really became competitive and the rate of improvement sped up. Now there are so many mobile phones available offering many numerous features, that mobile manufacturers have to try harder and harder to come up with innovations that will put them ahead of the pack.
Most people now expect a certain level of functionality from their phones, even from low-end feature models; including the ability to send text messages, listen to music and take photos. Most phones also offer at least a few basic games too. Smart phones, on the other hand, offer users a whole different experience. Rather than being phones with a few added on features and functions, many of today's top smart phones are more akin to a personal computer that has the ability to make calls.
Another feature that has revolutionised the way that people use their mobile phones is the introduction of the mobile web - where people can access the internet from their handsets. This means that mobile phones are increasingly moving towards becoming integrated bits of technology that offer call functions, all the features of a personal organiser and all the connectivity of a Netbook computer.
Checking emails and keeping on top of a heavy workload however, isn't all that the new generation of smart phones is designed for. In fact, mobiles are increasingly turning on to social features and looking for ways to make it easier for users to interact with their favourite social networks through their phones. By making it simple to take and upload photographs and including geotargeted functions and features as well as real time communication, mobile phones are offering users new ways to connect and it's likely these multimedia features will continue to expand as technology advances.
Touchscreens are another development that suggests that mobile phones will become ever more instinctive, with phones like the
Samsung Monte indicating that phones with the ability to predict and anticipate what function the user is looking for is one that will be expanded on in the future.
