What's Weighing You Down?

What's Weighing You Down?

What's Weighing You Down?

In this week's article I want to focus on one key theme Forgiveness.

Strange topic in relation to weight loss? Well, actually not at all.

In our lastarticle (What Are You Weighting' For) we talked about how being stuck in the present can have a major impact on your ability to lose weight. Well, being stuck in the past has the same impact too and one of the best ways to keep ourselves stuck in the past is being unable to forgive another person or unable to forgive ourselves.

What does being unforgiving reallymean?

Being unforgiving is a very heavy burden to carry it truly weighs you down. What it means, when you really think about it, is that you bear a grudge towards someone, that you resent them, that you blame them, that you want some kind of revenge. You feel they owe you something and you're not going to forgive them until they've paid you back or you've made them pay. And you think you're making them pay by holding this grudge, by the mere act of being unforgiving.

Who's paying the price?

But in reality, who's paying the price? Sometimes these are people we haven't seen in years. Sometimes they're people that we rarely see. Often they're people who've forgotten all about the incident because they're blissfully unaware they had even upset us in the first place!

The only person living with this burden day in and day out is you.

The only person holding onto this past hurt is you.

The only person who is really suffering is you.

So, is it about you?

Now, when this is about you; when you're unable/unwilling to forgive yourself, then there is some method in your madness! Not forgiving yourself is like self-flagellation. You are beating yourself up for what you did, making yourself pay. You feel you are somehow making amends for whatever sin you believe you committed.

But the fact is that the harder we judge ourselves, the harder we judge others. The likely outcome of this behaviour is that you are much harder to live with/be around; in otherwordsit will be affecting a lot of other people too. When we forgive ourselves, we are able to be more forgiving and more compassionate in our lives generally. We become much nicer human beings!

Forgiving someone doesn't mean you're agreeing with them

The main reason people seem to struggle with forgiveness is that they have a sense that in forgiving a person, they are somehow condoning the behaviour, saying it was alright really. That is not the case.

Forgiving someone means letting go of the hurt

Forgiveness is, in my view, an act of great personal healing. When you forgive another person, or indeed yourself, you let go of all the hurt you've been carrying around with you for years; you release all the pent-up negative energy that's been swirling around inside of you sapping you of positive energy; and you give yourself permission to move forward with your life. You stop weighing yourself down.

And when you stop weighing yourself down, you will find the positive energy and momentum to move forward in your life and to achieve all the goals you set yourself, including losing weight and becoming the person you want to be!
