What's Your Value System Like? (Part 2)

Steps to creating your own set of values should include, but are not limited to:

The scriptures

Taking counsel from older folks

Books and related literature

Common sense

We looked at the first two steps in Part 1 of this article

Books and Related literature

One amazing thing that mankind has been able to achieve to date, is the documentation of just about everything that has happened to us while living in this earth, especially after the discovery of the ability to write. What ever your topic of interest, you will always be able to locate books and literature relating to this from libraries close to you, or in the school you attend. Rather than spending most of your free moments reading comics, or playing computer games, search out for books that will teach a lesson or two.

A good suggestion in this regard is for you to develop the habit of reading biographies and auto biographies of different men and women: inventors, scientist, thinkers, humanitarians and philanthropists the list is endless. It will interest you to find that the same basic, core values of honesty, integrity, hard work, the fear of God, and compassion for humanity runs through for every age, and society that have upheld positive value systems. It pays to "buy the truth, and not sell it" (Proverbs 23:23 - Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding.)

The Internet is also a very major source of literature, as more and more persons are finding their way there. How ever, develop the discipline while navigating through the Internet to use it as a tool to build up your knowledge base and not to destroy what you already have. Suffice it to say that the Internet contains a lot of destructive information. Finally, get into the habit of becoming the member of a reading club, and take the time to develop a reading culture.

Common Sense

We can safely assume, for the purpose of this article, that to a large degree, every one possesses some basic level of common sense the level of the average intelligence of the human being, as compared with animals and lower life forms affords us the privilege of knowing what is right, as opposed to wrong, and doing something about it. When extended to value systems, it becomes natural to build your personal set of values on the basic foundation of what is right and what is wrong. How ever it is amazing that at times, a young adult who realizes that a particular action is not the right thing to do, will, out of an attitude of outward defiance or rebellion, go ahead and carry out the action. For example, while hanging out with friends, walking down the street, you feel like hitting the glass window with a piece of stone, knowing that the window will be broken. Even though knowing this to be a bad judgment on you part, but under provocation from your peers, and a sudden rush of adrenalin, the stone gets thrown, and the window shatters!

Reality only dawns on you, when you get caught in the act and punished for what you had done. This is where your common sense plays a vital role. Your common sense should tell you that right is right, and wrong is wrong, otherwise you will end up every time becoming a victim of other peoples errors of judgment!

Ultimately, you are personally responsible for the set of values operating in your individual life. All the above mentioned, if combined together in the right proportions, allowing each one to influence your values in the right amounts will make you end up developing and cultivating a healthy set of values. Developing the right value system goes beyond you as an individual, to affecting the people around you. You eventually end up building a better society by personally developing a proper value system based on fair, moral, ethical and spiritual set of values.

How can our countries be rebuilt? By young folks like you taking up the challenge to build their lives on sound value systems, one individual at a time. And it begins with you!
