What's in an outside broadcast van?

Many people have walked past an outside broadcast (OB) van and squealed with excitement, perhaps shouting "I wanna be on the TV!" However few are unaware of the wonders held inside these compact vehicles, which allow professionals to broadcast television signals from anywhere in the world.

Some names given for OB vans include remote trucks, live trucks, live eyes, scanners and mobile units. They usually consist of around five parts, each dedicated to a different aspect of the broadcast.

The first section of the van is the largest - the production area. This is the space in which all of the directors sit - including the main director, technical and assistant directors. They may be joined by the producers and the character generator operators, if required.

Within this area (which is basically a smaller version of the typical production control room, found at most television stations) the crew involved will sit in from of the video feeds and switched, watching the various sources of visual - including the cameras, video tapes, slow motion replays, video servers and computer graphics.

A preview monitor could also be set up, showing the crew what is likely to happen next, and the area is well-connected to all others, as it's vital that directors have constant dialogue with the editor, to ensure what is being broadcast is 'clean' (i.e. produced to the director's standards).

The second part of the van usually houses the audio engineer, who mixes the sound from the visual feed and optimizes the quality of sound being broadcast to the viewers. The third section usually holds all previous video tapes, as well as additional power generators and back-up computer equipment.

The video control area usually accounts for the fourth area, which is where camera operators ensure the equipment picks up the best possible picture, in line with directorial instructions.

The fifth and final section of the OB van is usually the transmission area, where the signal is monitored, engineering and sent out to all those watching the outside broadcast.
