Old man winter throws down some serious carnage every year, but this year seems a bit more crazy than normal. We saw travelers across the east coast stuck in airports during the holidays, and just as the ugly memories of subway travelers in New York stranded for hours fades, now there is a new group in this predicament SoCal. Yes , Southern California, the land where it doesn't rain yeah right.
So just how do you prepare for unexpected delays when traveling? I have four words for you fellow travelers pack in your carry on! Now, I know many people simply can't pack everything in carry on luggage, especially for long trips. But, the essentials for any trip should always be carried on your person, along with a few extra provisions for that unpredictable emergency that can pop up. Here are just a few items I recommend packing in your carry on luggage to be ready for anything.
Extra clothing undies, under shirt, jacket, extra socks. If you're stuck in the car for hours by surprise, you can layer up. Or if your baggage gets lost you will have something clean to wear.
Snacks nuts, raisins, chocolate, and other high energy foods. These can be helpful for sustaining you if you end up in an airport without facilities.
Toilet Paper a small travel pack of toilet paper is perfect. We don't need to tell you what this is for. It may not be a pleasant thought, but a worse thought is to think what you'd do without it!
Cell phone and charger be ready in case you need to call for help. If you're traveling through a particularly rough snow storm, leave the phone off. This will save the battery in case you need to call for help.
Water This is a good idea anytime, and it's true you can't carry it through security, but once through you can do what you want. Buy the water, carry it on the plane, etc. Water is the essence of life.
Entertainment ipad, mp3 player, portable gaming console, magazine, books, kindle, etc. It's not an essential survival item, but it's a great way to pass the time if you're sitting in a car for hours or parked in an airport overnight.
Emergency cash The plastic is good, but cold hard cash always talks, no matter what part of the country (and often the world) you are in, a little US currency can get you out of a tight spot or at least buy you a snack.
There you have it folks. There are plenty of other things you could take along in your carry on luggage, but make sure you have these items before you head out the door. They might just save your life or make it more comfortable if you get stranded.
