In Singapore, there are many festivals and events celebrated by different cultural groups and people from different ethnicities. The rich blend of traditions and culture in Singapore ensures that every month, there is a festivity of some sort or other. Each celebration brings with it splendour and ceremonial rituals that all people enjoy and take part in. Many Singapore hotels offer attractive packages coinciding with various festivals and events.

In January, the Hindu festival Thaipusam is celebrated. Many devotees, mostly men, walk for about 3 kilometres from Sri Srinivasa Perumal temple to Sri Thandayuthapani temple, carrying a kavadi' on their heads, praying, singing, reciting prayers all the way.

In the month of February, the yearly event of River Hong Bao Festival is celebrated at the waterfront locale near Marina Promenade. The festival is based on the premise of the Chinese zodiac symbol for that year. On display are floats portraying the Chinese zodiac animals, Chinese gods, pagodas, temples, cherry blossom' trees etc. There are stalls featuring arts and crafts, Chinese calligraphy etc.

Chinese New Year is the most significant fair in the Chinese lunar calendar. The festivities last for at least 15 days and are held during January and February. The whole island indulges in revelry and is definitely a visual indulgence to tourists, especially around the Chinatown area.

The Chingay Parade is the largest parade in Singapore. Carnivals, floats, dancers, acrobats, gymnasts are the highlights of this event.

The annual Singapore Grand Prix is a major motor race of the FIA Formula One World Championship. The event attracts a huge amount of tourists to Singapore, which is marked by parties, race-themed events, music concerts, exhibitions and dining, and shopping experiences.

In the Qing Ming Festival, devotees visit the temples to celebrate, remember and offer prayers to their predecessors. They also visit the graveyards to offer prayers. Tourists can witness this in Kong Meng San Phor Kark at Sin Ming Road.

The Singapore Triathlon held in April, is a yearly occurrence organized by the Triathlon Association of Singapore. Participants are required to swim 1.5 kms in the sea, cycle about 40 kms and run an exhausting 10 km.

Buddhists celebrate the Vesak Day in May, marked with a lot of rituals and religious fervour visiting Buddhist temples. This Day honours the birth and illumination of Lord Buddha.

Dragon Boat or Rice Dumpling Festival, occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month in the lunar calendar. People have rice dumplings and take part in dragon boat races. The Festival of the Hungry Ghost held in August is dedicated to spirits and is considered an inauspicious time. No important decisions are taken during this period. Localites light incense sticks and offer food, fruits to placate the spirits. During this time, Chinatown has to be visited.

The Mooncake Festival held in September is also referred to as the Lantern Festival or the Mid-Autumn Festival. The festival includes making of mooncakes in memory of the patriot Shu Yuan Zhang. People in processions carry lanterns to mark the festival.

The festival of the Nine Emperor Gods is believed by localites to usher in good luck, money and health. This lasts for nine days and is primarily held at the Nine Emperor Gods temple at Upper Serangoon Road.


Deepavali is a Hindu festival of lights and during this time tourists' should visit Little India where numerous stalls, music, lights and food are displayed.

The famed Singapore Marathon is a yearly event held in December and athletes from around the world take part in it.

During Christmas, celebrations are on in full swing bringing in the Christmas fever in the city and malls.
