What's that Roofer Doing Up There?

Many home owners wonder just what a roofing contractor looks for when he's up on the roof. Some may wear a small tool belt and carry a clipboard. The good ones always have that and a small camera.

A roofing contractor will inspect your roof for damage done by hail, wind and age. He will outline individual areas with chalk and take a photo of it. Then he will draw a graph and take measurements, noting where vents, chimneys and satellite dishes are located.

Let's consider a few areas they concentrate on and see why normal maintenance isn't enough after a hail storm comes rolling in.

This is where the obvious hail damage sticks out like a sore thumb to a roofing contractor. Exhaust vents are made up of a soft metal that easily dents. When a roofing contractor is on your roof, the first area he looks at will be the vents caps. If there's nothing there, then likely, there's not much anywhere else.

Due to the way a roof cap sits on a house, if a hail has hit the home it will show up here next. The last area will be in clusters on the flat part of the roof itself. The contractor inspecting the roof will take out his chalk and circle each hail hit' and take a picture of it for his records and to show you once he climbs down off the roof.

Signs of damage in the valleys

Depending on the side of the house a valley is on, ice can take several days or even weeks to melt. During that time frame the ice can really wreak havoc in the valleys. The shingles can be severely damaged causing the integrity of the shingles membrane to break down at a rapid rate.
