What's the Difference Between Botox and Juvederm?

Botox and Dysport are injectable medicines made from botulinum toxins that work to temporarily paralyze and weaken muscles

. This temporary paralysis allows the skin to smooth out wrinkles at the injection site. The FDA approved area of the face for cosmetic use is the glabella, which is the area between the eyebrows. However, patients are able to inject Botox in many other areas of the face. After the Botox injection, it will take about 5-7 days to see the full result.

Juvederm and Restylane are dermal fillers. They are both the same generic chemical, hyaluronic aced, which will plump or fill in wrinkles and lines. The FDA approved area for the injections is the nasolabial fold, which are the folds next to your lips and in your cheek area. Some people refer to them as the "parentheses" lines. Juvederm is injected into these folds to make them less visible. Juvederm can also be used to enhance your lips or fill in skin indentations. After the injection, you will notice the results immediately.

Although both Botox and Juvederm are injected into the face, they do very different things. Botox will make your wrinkles look better or disappear, because the muscles forming them will not work as well. Juvederm works to fill in fold or deeper wrinkles, generally around the cheek and chin areas. Both medications are generally injected in an office setting and do not require significant anesthesia for safe injection.

Normally, Botox lasts for about 3 months while Juvederm can last up to 1 year. However, Juvederm treatments cost more each visit than Botox.
