What are domain trust and authority?

Domain trust and authority are two critical ingredients to ranking high in search engine results

. Your website may have the greatest content in your niche but if it has low domain trust and authority it will not appear high on the results page.

What is domain trust?

Domain trust generally means how credible and trustworthy the site is in its specific area. The main factors include what type of sites you link to and what type of sites link to you.

The first stop for a search engine in looking at domain trust is, what sites link to yours. If Google discovers your site has links from trusted domains such as online editorial sites like wikipedia your site is more likely to be trusted. On the other hand, if your site has thousands of links from spam sites, your site is likely to be judged as spammy.

Likewise, if you have links to a lot of spammy sites, this will degrade your domain trust. In fact, the effect of outbound links is greater than for inbound because as the site author, you decide where you create links.

Examples of credible sites that will increase domain trust include online reference sites like dmoz and dictionary.com, as well as government sites (.gov), schools and universities (.edu), and nonprofit organizations (.org). These sites are credible partly because they don't link to sites with spam.

What is domain authority?

Domain authority is a measure of the number of quality pages that link to your website. This likely includes not just an individual page on your site but your site as a whole. The search engines look at link diversity as well. Having links from 100 different domains is better than the same number of links from 10 different domains. Since it is generally more difficult to get links from many domains than from a few, so you should consider the tradeoff between number and diversity of links.

Domain authority also depends on your site's link structure. A natural link structure raises your domain authority. A natural link structure is one that links to pages in your entire website, instead of links only to your home page, and one that grows gradually over time. Therefore, adding lots of content and links suddenly to your site can look suspicious to the search engines; it's better to add content gradually over weeks and months.
