In order to answer this question we have to refer to religious texts of the three major monotheistic religions namely the Torah, the Gospel and the Qur'an.
When God decided to create man he commanded the angels and demons, once He has fashioned him and breathed into him from His soul, to fall down in prostration unto man. This is the case for many reasons. The act of prostration is in acknowledgment of the creation of God. Another reason could be that man embodied good and evil in him representing the extremes of pure good namely the angels and extreme evil Satan himself. It also could be that God wanted to put on trial the angels and demons in reaction to His command.
When man was created and came to life, all angels fell don in prostration unto man. Stan refused to prostrate out of his arrogance. When asked by God what reason did Satan have not to obey the command of God, Satan retorted that he was better than man for: You have created him from argyle and clay and you have created me from fire, I am better than him.'
Then God ordained Satan to be thrown out of the Garden, but Satan asked God to give him a respite in order to tempt man to deny God, disobey Him and take for worship Satan himself: I shall come from their behinds, their fronts and in between their hands and You shall find most of them disbelieving in You and are ungrateful.' God gave Satan respite and warned Adam and Eve against Satan's evil intentions and powers. Satan was given free hand in using everything (earthly life and rejection of God)to dissuade man from the path of God.
God told Adam and Eve to dwell in the Garden and not to approach the forbidden Tree and not to eat from it. The forbidden Tree is the Tree of knowledge of good and evil according to the Bible; it is the Tree of procreation, according to the Qur'an. If they obey God and not Satan, their avowed enemy now, they would live eternally in Paradise, and have no hunger or thirst nor out of lodging.
But Satan tempted Adam and Eve avowing to them that he is their good advisor. He told them that God forbade them not to eat from the tree in order not to be knowledgeable, and also in order not to angels and not to immortals. Adam and Eve succumbed to the Devil's temptation. God then expelled the three of them, Adam, Eve and Satan from the Garden. He warned them again that Satan is an avowed enemy of humans and humans ought not to succumb his temptations.
God said to Adam and Eve that those who follow the footsteps of Satan and deny God, worshipping satan instead and being ungrateful to God, their abode shall be Gahanna, Hell Fire, for eternity. As for those who reject Satan and do not succumb to his temptations shall be rewarded with eternal felicity in paradise. So God gave man the free choice between the path of God and the path of the Devil.
A perfect example of this can be traced vividly in the temptation of Jesus Christ by Satan, in the Gospel. After fasting for forty days Christ was tempted three times by the devil. Christ in these three times refused to listen to the devil who promised him the whole kingdoms and riches of the earth if he would prostrate unto him and leave the worship of God. But Christ refused and asked the Veil to leave him: Go away Satan.' And, Satan left him.
If all humans do as Christ did and refuse to hearken to the devil, then the battle against the devil is won and our planet earth would be in a better condition from the human side and all humans would go to paradise.
However, alas, this is not the case, for the handiwork of the devil wins the souls of humans and most of them are disbelievers in God preferring this life to the life in the Hereafter.
