In the past, a civil enforcement officer was called a parking attendant
. The main job functions in this role are to ensure that parking and waiting restrictions are adhered to whether cars are parked on-street or within a designated car park. The switch of title from parking attendant to civil enforcement officer occurred in March 2008 and was part of the government's new regulations for Civil Parking Enforcement.
This role covers a wide range of activities over and above issuing penalty notices to people breaking parking regulations. However, the main bulk of the day would involve patrolling areas to ensure that parking and places with a limited waiting time were being used appropriately. The situations where regulations have been violated a civil enforcement officer will need to issue a penalty charge notice otherwise known as a parking ticket and record that information either manually or via a computerised system.
Other tasks involve checking car park equipment and ticket meters to ensure they are fully functioning as well as making sure car park areas are maintained and clean. A civil enforcement officer would also report any parking signs or lines that are missing or incorrect and will spend time educating motorists as to the regulations applied to an area as well as directing people to appropriate parking facilities. You would also be required to report any cars that have been abandoned to the appropriate authorities. To carry out this job you will have hand held equipment to produce penalty charges, cameras so that you can provide evidence when a violation has occurred and a two-way radio or mobile so you can contact your supervisor.
