Using depth gauges, scientists have watched Weddell seals dive down to 1500 feet in depth
. This is a mammalian record. Another record held relates to breathing; one Weddell seal was underwater for over 28 minutes before it required air. One scientist was able to get samples of a mother seal's milk. Seal pups add weight faster than any other known mammal; this could be due to the fact that seal milk has much more fat in it than human milk does. A baby seal can be expected to quintuple its weight in six short weeks. Scientists have investigated Antarctic seas wearing special frogman dive suits. They even found red, among other colored, seaweed growing on the sea floor. Starfish, sponges and worms also inhabited the ocean's floor.
