What is Cydia?
Cydia is a software application for iOS that allows Jailbroken iPhone users, Jailbroken iPad users, and Jailbroken iPod touch users to download software packages and applications to their devices from the internet. The packages available in Cydia are provided by a decentralized system of repositories that list these packages. Most of the softwares available through Cydia are free.
Since these software packages run on jailbroken devices, they can provide functionality outside the scope of standard applications: system-wide changes to the user interface, modifications of button actions, extensions of networking behavior, and other "tweaks" to the system. Also iPhone users must have Cydia installed in their device in order to be able to unlock it.

Freeman first released Cydia in March 2008 as an open-source alternative toInstaller.appon iPhone OS 1.1, but Cydia quickly became the most popular package manager after iPhone OS 2.0's release in July 2008.
In August 2009, Freeman said "about 4 million, or 10 percent of the 40 million iPhone and iPod Touch owners to date, have installed Cydia."
In September 2010, Freeman's company, Saurik IT, LLC, announced that it had acquired Rock Your Phone, Inc. (makers of Rock.app), which made the Cydia Store the largest third-party app store for jailbroken iOS devices
As of December 2010, Freeman plans to also release a Cydia Store forMac OS Xas an alternative to Apple'sMac App Store
