What is Floss and How it is Done

Floss is to eliminating plaque and food from in between the teeth

. Regular flossing may also help to reduce the risk of cardiac diseases according to a research study from some Medical Center.

Flossing is sometimes considered as less important to brushing teeth but flossing is equally important as brushing teeth at least once a day. Cosmetic Dentistry confirms flossing removes all the plaque and food particles that the bristles of a brush are unable to remove. If plaque is not removed it forms a cause for decay and infection. Before flossing your teeth it is of utmost importance to select the right quality of floss and know the right procedure of flossing.

Dental floss is a bundle of thin nylon filaments or a plastic (Teflon or polyethylene) ribbon used to remove food and dental plaque from teeth. The floss is gently inserted between the teeth and scraped along the teeth sides, especially close to the gums. Dental floss may be flavored or unflavored, and waxed or unwaxed. An alternative tool to achieve the same effect is the interdentally brush.

Flossing should be done twice a day before brushing your teeth, if it is not possible to floss teeth twice. It is recommended to floss teeth at least in the night before going to bed.

Dental floss is commonly supplied in plastic dispensers that contain 10 to 50 meters of floss. After pulling out the desired amount, the floss is pulled against a small protected blade in the dispenser to sever it.

Flossing works where a toothbrush cannot reach for example areas along the gum line and area between the teeth.

Dental floss is held between the fingers. The floss is guided between each tooth and under the gumline to remove particles of food stuck between teeth and plaque that adhere to such dental surfaces. Ideally using a C-shape, the floss is curved around a tooth and placed under the gumline, and then moved away from the gumline, the floss scrapes the side of each tooth, and can also clean the front or back of the tooth. A clean section of floss can be used to clean each tooth to avoid transmitting plaque bacteria from one tooth to another.

If someone follows a strict regimen of proper flossing followed with the right technique of brushing teeth you will have a healthy and plaque free set of teeth for the whole of your life.
