What is Holistic Dentistry: Durango CO

The term holistic is defined by Aristotle as the whole is more than the sum of the parts. In dentistry, we can therefore say that when we treat the patient we are not just looking at treating within the mouth but the whole person. This means several things. First, the conditions in your mouth such as decay, gum disease, missing teeth, and other problems can affect your body. Second, the materials we place in your mouth can also affect the whole person. As a holistic general dentist we try to use natural products as much as possible. We feel that natural products are kinder to the body and the body reacts more favorably to this kind of treatment without side affects. Natural toothpastes and mouth rinses, herbal remedies for pain are just a few things we use in this office. We also use acupuncture for pain control and relaxation.

Why should people look at holistic dentistry?

If you are in any way involved in looking at your own health issues with the idea of leading a longer, healthier life, you owe it to yourself to look at the dental component of health.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of looking in your mouth as a source of health risks are many. How healthy do you want to be?

Holistic tips on Teeth

If you dont floss your teeth, start today. If your teeth bleed when you brush or floss, then you have an infection in your mouth. Healthy gums do not bleed, period. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day.

Using an herbal tooth paste and rinse is preferred over conventional toothpastes and mouth rinses. Conventional toothpastes may contain ingredients that may cause reactions or allergies to you. Use a mouth rinse without alcohol because alcohol may dry the gums too much which can be harmful. If you have gum disease, you may have to visit the dentist more often than every 6 months. The old saying, see your dentist every 6 months was a marketing ploy by a toothpaste company back in the 1920s. This caught on with the insurance companies as this ultimately saved them money. If your gums bleed, see a dentist! Remember, gum disease like a heart disease is a silent killer and they are related!

Stay away from refined sugar and candy. They can ultimately rot your teeth. Stop drinking soda as the acid and sugar in the soda will ultimately cause cavities. If you have to chew gum, chew gum with xylitol instead of sugar. Xylitol has been proven to help prevent tooth decay.

Take your vitamins and minerals. Get a good source of vitamins from a health food store, not from a drug store chain as usually the vitamins they stock are of cheaper value and do not absorb well. Synthetic vitamins and minerals are to be avoided.

Eat organic food. This is better for you as non organic food can be laced with many toxins and poisons. They are not as nutritious as organic foods. Foods that are genetically engineered or radiated should also be avoided.

Cut out the smoking. This caused gum disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and many other health problems.

Missing teeth or decayed teeth need to be restored. If you have missing teeth, more pressure is applied to the remaining teeth and this could cause premature wear, fractures on the teeth and jaw problems. If you have decayed teeth they could eventually abscess and cause infections. These infections in your mouth can cause medical problems in the rest of your body.
