What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is a condition where an individual is unable to sleep. It is also a condition wherein a person is unable to sleep long enough for the body to repair itself of all the damages and stresses that it was exposed to during the day's activity. Insomnia, also referred to by experts as dysomnia or wakefulness, has 4 types of symptoms.

First, a person suffering from insomnia has difficulties falling asleep on most nights. He or she also tends to wake up several times during sleep. He or she also doesn't feel refreshed every time he or she wakes up. A person with such condition also feels tired during the day or may tend to fall asleep during the day.

Dysomnia or wakefulness also has two types and each of these types is caused by different factors. The first type is known as primary insomnia. This type of wakefulness is not known to be caused by any physical or mental illness or condition. Primary insomnia is known to be caused by anxiety and stress. Drinking too much alcohol and coffee are also known to cause this type of dysomnia.

The other type of dysomnia is known as secondary or comorbid insomnia. Unlike primary insomnia, this is caused by a medical condition. One of the common types of medical condition that causes this type of insomnia is depression.

Other conditions that may cause this type of wakefulness include gastrointestinal disorders, overactive thyroid, asthma, heart failure, arthritis, restless legs syndrome, menopause, hot flashes, etc. This may also be caused by certain medicines for asthma, allergy and cold such as theophylline and beta blockers.

People suffering from wakefulness tend to become depressed, anxious and easily irritated. Thus, it not only affects an individual suffering from it, but it also affects those people that he or she care for. Fortunately, there are many ways that can help you sleep well every night.

Meditation, an activity which has been practiced for thousands of years, is one of the many activities that can help people overcome dysomnia. To know more about this technique, you can visit www.meditate.com.au/blog or www.meditate.com.au/members.
