What is Real / Fake iEDGE Packaging Differences
What is Real / Fake iEDGE Packaging Differences
Hi there everyone - we've managed to get our hands on two sets of iEDGE cards - one which is real and one which is fake - and can present to you even more differences between them than we first thought.
We previously reported that the packaging between the real and fake iEDGEs were identical and difficult to tell apart - we now know this isn't the case. The reason this was previously thought was simply because photos used by websites that sold the fake card, were actually photos of the original! Now that we have one of each, though, we're able to quite clearly show you the subtle differences that give away the fact that one of these iEDGEs is fake. We present the first (to our knowledge) side-by-side comparison of a real and fake iEDGE card's packaging and appearance!
Front of the Box for Real / Fake iEDGE
These look pretty similar, don't they? Are you able to tell which is the real and which is the fake iEDGE card if it were not for the captions on the photos?
The main differences on the front of the card are as follows:
The original iEDGE has an "(i) compatible" text on the bottom right of the front of the packaging. The fake iEDGE does not.
The fake iEDGE has "iEDGE" firmly written across the top centre of the packaging box. The real iEDGE does not and keeps a black space there.
If you look closely, the logos are fundamentally different. The fake iEDGE has attempted to incorporate the "i" into the actual logo design, while the original iEDGE has kept the packaging the same as the original card. A more detailed image is below.
Back of the Box for Original iEDGE / Fake iEDGE
The back of the box for the original iEDGE and fake iEDGE also has some distinct differences.
The real iEDGE only has two lines of text on the back of the box towards the bottom, and lists the website at (the official website)
The fake iEDGE has operating instructions on the back of the box including directing users to the fake website at (the FAKE WEBSITE)
Some closer inspections of the front of the boxes for the real and fake iEDGE cards can be seen below.
Twist Band / Rubber Band for Real and Fake iEDGE
Another obvious difference between the real and fake iEDGEs can be seen if you twist the elastic band / twist band that the packaging comes with.
As you can see from the above photo:
The real iEDGE card in the background twists around to reveal a reciprocal design. One side is light blue with grey "EDGE" text, while the other side is grey with light blue "EDGE" text.
The fake iEDGE is light blue on both sides, with the "iEDGE" motif only on one side of the band.
iEDGE Card Colour
The colour of the iEDGE card is also sometimes used to tell the difference between a real and fake iEDGE card.
The real iEDGE card is white (the card itself, NOT the sticker on the card) and the fake iEDGE card is black.
However, we do NOT recommend using this as a 100% foolproof method for telling if a card is real or fake! The original EDGE DS card came in both white and black and they were all original, so it is possible that the iEDGE may switch or mix colours in the future. Do NOT use the colour of the card alone to determine whether a card is real or fake!
Software Differences and Other Signs of a Real or Fake iEDGE Card
For other differences including differences in software, please take a look at the first article we did on Fake iEDGE cards and how to tell them apart once you are using them.
Hopefully this was of help to you!
Buying Genuine / Real iEDGE Cards
This is a problem with the iEDGE cards - just from looking at the packaging it is incredibly difficult to tell whether or not they are genuine. Because of this, we have a list of websites where you can purchase a real iEDGE card (we have actually made a purchase on every site to confirm this - so rest assured we check! :-). If you are in doubt as to where your card comes from, always e-mail the vendor first to ask what the official website of the card is. Help protect against fakes!
If you know of other websites we may be able to add to the list, please contact us straight away so we can send an e-mail to other sites to talk to them about adding them to the list on this site. We're also particularly looking for Canadian and Australian suppliers at the moment - so please contact us if you run a website or know of one that could be here!
Armed with this information, you should be able to buy a real iEDGE with no problems. Best wishes!
