What is Stevens Johnson Syndrome Relation To The Drug Bextra
Stevens Johnsons Syndrome is a life threatening and potentially fatal skin disease that gets its name from doctors Albert Mason Stevens and Frank Chambliss Johnson whose 1922 jointly published a description of the disorder in the American Journal of Diseases of Children helped raise awareness of the seriousness of this deadly disease. Stevens Johnson Syndrome outbreaks were commonly brought on from adverse reaction to the drug Bextra, until its FDA ban in 2005.
The drug Bextra, and its generic name valdecoxib are also known to increase risks for heart attack and stroke. The drugwas originallydeveloped as a prescription pain medication to treat osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and the severe pain associated with menstrual cramping. The FDA approved the drug Bextra in 2001.
Another form of the disease is called Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, and again this usually results from a drug-related reaction. Both forms of the disease can be deadly as well as very painful and distressing.
Stevens Johnson Syndrome usually begins with fever, sore throat, and fatigue, which is misdiagnosed and usually treated with antibiotics. Ulcers and other lesions begin to appear in the mucous membranes, almost always in the mouth and lips but also in the genital and anal regions.
While Stevens Johnson Syndrome is an infectious skin disease, it can be caused by secondary following infections such as herpes simplex virus, influenza, mumps, although these types of outbreak are far less common than the recent reported adverse reaction to the drug Bextra.
Following an in-depth investigation of the drug manufacture Pfizer, and one its subsidiaries Pharmacia & UpJohn Company by the United States Department of Justice, Pfizer paid 2.3 billion dollars in fines after Pharmacia & UpJohn Company pled guilty to Federal fraud and other charges stemming from the illegal distribution and deceptive marketing practices of Bextra.
The devastating side effects from Bextra have stripped the quality of life from thousands of people and in addition to the drug Bextra, Stevens Johnson Syndrome can also be induced by adverse effects from the following drugs as well:
allopurinol, Aloprim, Zyloprim, Dilantin, Depakote, Levaquin, diclofenac, etravirine, Isotretinoin, aka Accutane, fluconazole, valdecoxib, sitagliptin, oseltamivir, penicillins, barbiturates, sulfonamides, phenytoin, azithromycin, oxcarbazepine, zonisamide, modafinil, lamotrigine, nevirapine, pyrimethamine, ibuprofen, ethosuximide, carbamazepine, nystatin, and gout medications.
Recovering from Stevens Johnson Syndrome that was induced from taking drugs like Bextra can take years, and while many people do recover, the quality of their lives is substantially reduced from the horrific pain and other debilitating complications.
