What is a Computer Registry and Why Do I Have to Clean It
?
Everybody has probably heard it at some point. "You need to clean your registry!" Are you having some problems with your computer? "Just try cleaning your registry - see if that works!" Computer moving too slow? "Clean your registry to speed it up!" Everybody says it, but before doing it, wouldn't it make sense to understand what a registry even is?
Why Do I Even Need a Registry?
The purpose of your computer registry is to give your computer instructions as to what to do. When you want something done, you input whatever it is on your keyboard, or click your mouse, and then the registry takes over. The registry holds all the information for your computer. It keeps track of all the hardware and software you have installed, it controls the operating system, and even keeps track of the way you have your system configured with respect to settings and things along those lines. It's kind of like the instruction manual and roadmap for your computer.
Road Map for Your Computer
For the most part, the registry is very efficient, and things move smoothly. However, as time goes by, errors begin to accumulate, and some of the "instructions" may get lost along the way. Think of the road map. The map still says one thing, but the roads have changed a little bit so the map isn't completely accurate anymore. These errors often occur when you add or delete programs, and little "road marks" get lost in the process.
It's nothing you can really control - it happens to all of us. The registry still works, but it's just not as efficient as it could be due to the changes. It just needs to be tweaked every now and then, and that's where cleaning your registry comes into play. Obviously you need the registry, because your computer won't work without it. And it is really the most efficient way to handle the information and instructions your computer needs to operate correctly.
So Can I Fix It?
Sometimes these errors can get frustrating since they just occur without any wrongdoing on your part. Many people don't even know that their computer has a registry, much less what it does. In fact, some people think they need to buy a whole new computer just because theirs has stopped working properly, when all they really need to do is clean the registry.
Thankfully, it's possible to fix these registry errors and get your old computer back and running smoothly again! You just need to get rid of the errors, and your system can be working as well as it did on the day you took it out of the box. However, it's not a good idea to make this a do-it-yourself project! That's why there is a large variety of software that can do this process for you automatically. The software scans your registry and then decides if there are any errors that need to be repaired. The program then fixes the errors, cleans up your registry, and before you know it your computer is running much more efficiently once again.
An Ounce of Prevention...
It's a good idea to consider cleaning your registry even if you aren't experiencing problems - yet. It's only a matter of time before you will, and since your computer can't run properly without it, you may be able to fix the small errors now before they develop into large problems. It's easy to do and doesn't cost much for a good program so nip problems in the bud before they grow!
