With that being said, that's not what makes a company a network marketing company. Unfortunately, MLM companies have also been given the title of a pyramid scheme which is connected with being dishonest companies looking to make quick, easy and dishonest money. Even though there are many pyramid schemes out there, most companies are perfectly legitimate.

There are many varying compensation plans among the hundreds of network marketing companies out there, but they all basically use the same concept of letting its customers become partners with the company meaning they can enroll other customers on their own who will also possess the ability to enroll customers of their own. Also, this concept means you will earn a small percentage not only on the products your enrolled customers buy, but also on the products their enrolled customers purchase as well, and so on and so on going many levels deep. This is also why it has been granted the term multi level marketing or MLM for short. All of these multiple levels below you are referred to as your downline or your organization.

So let's take a side track for a moment and talk about what makes a company a legitimate network marketing company and what makes it a pyramid scheme which you should clearly stay away from. A legitimate MLM company pays its distributors primarily based on the amount of product or services being purchased within your downline.
