What is a Smartboard?

During the last few years, teaching technology has advanced massively.

At first, a chalkboard was commonly used, and although it was effective it tended to be rather messy, particularly whenever you were cleaning it. From that point, white boards began to be used because you could use a variety of different markers and then easily wipe away the marker without any of the messy residue. Now we have the interactive whiteboard. Many manufacturers started to develop interactive whiteboards, but the market leader developed a board commonly known as the Smartboard. The actual whiteboards that are considered to be smartboards are manufactured by a company known as Smart Technologies. If you're not familiar with smartboards, here are some of the things that they are capable of doing.

The old way was to use dry markers or chalk, but the smartboard allows you to write on the surface with your finger, special pens or any other object that you could easily write with. It seems as if you are physically writing on the screen itself, but you are actually not.

The pens that you are using are actually digital, and they contain buttons that allow you to easily use many of the processes that are available. There is also a standard keyboard that can be shown on the screen, so when you touch letters with pens or your finger they appear on the screen. The pens and keyboard allows for lots of different ways of making teaching more interesting and flexible.

As far as the programming that goes into one of these smartboards, it is something that runs directly on your computer. The program, known as Notebook is used by educators to be able to effectively use the interactive whiteboard in a classroom setting. Businesses are starting to use smartboards in boardrooms and training rooms to help with conferences and training days.

That is where the real beauty of these interactive whiteboards come into play. You can use them as a standalone aid or there is a possibility that they can be used across the network, intranet or internet. The obvious benefit of this is that training and conferences can take place and you all do not need to be in the same room, which can save on time and travel costs.

Of course, as with anything, smartboards are a developing technology, but one that is sure to be utilized for many years to come. With over 1 million of these interactive whiteboards in existence, and more being developed all the time, you are sure to find that it is something that will be utilized regularly and is a rather convenient item to own.
