What is an Insulator?

Many people are amazed at how much an insulator can do to everyday living. Ever since it has been developed and used on a daily basis it began to change lives. For those who do not know what an insulator is, it is also referred to as non-conductor. A conductor is a substance or material that allows good flow of energy from one body to another; an insulator does the opposite. It hinders the flow of electricity from one body to another connected body.

An insulator comes in many forms. It can be in solid, liquid or gaseous state and can be used to prevent the flow of electricity for safety measures. In the modern day, insulation is used to as to allow people to do whatever they are doing without the threat of being electrocuted. Insulation is typically done in important construction facilities that need electricity to flow without endangering those that are near it. Another form of insulation prevents the flow of heat, which is also a byproduct of electric energy. The flow of heat is lessened by insulating the material. This way, some of the heat energy escapes and is converted to other forms of energy.

There are many applications of insulation. In electrical engineering, it enables engineers to work on switches and circuits without worrying about the flow of electricity harming them; the cooks will be able to carry insulated pots and pans freely even though they are containing boiling substances. The body also needs insulation so that it is not prone to being electrified.
