If you want to get more traffic, sales and leads you should be tracking what your doing. Tracking and understanding conversion rates is a big part of the story.

Firstly, what is a conversion rate?

Let's say you want to track conversions for sales. An easy way to understand conversions would be to take the number of visitors who come to your site then analysis that in relation to the number of sales.

The easiest way to do this is to divide sales by visitors. So if you have 300 visitors and 3 sales then you have a conversion rate of 1%. If you have 366 visitors and 3 sales then you have a .81% conversion rate.

The real power comes in when you start to track every possible stat then make some improvements to increase your conversions.

For example, you could create a squeeze page, a web page asking for a visitors name and email in exchange for a free download typically used for building mailing lists, and send some traffic to it.

If you get 36 people to opt in to your mailing list out of 167 then you have a 21.5% conversion rate. Your next step would be to change something, like the headline, and then see if it improves your conversions or not.

Let's say you change the headline then you do another test. This time you get 44 to opt in with 187 visitors. Now you have a 23.5% ratio. This is strangely powerful.

In this example, you have gotten 2% more results for the same amount of effort. But then you can do some more changes and slowly but surly make the page better and better.
