What is an MP3?

What is an MP3?

What is an MP3?

Almost all of us have bought a music album sometimes in our lives. In the past, one used to buy an audio cassette. Next came music recorded on a CD or DVD. Now buying music is as simple as logging on to the internet and downloading the songs or an entire album in a matter of a few minutes. You might have wondered that how has the music download from the internet made possible. To answer this question, one must know and understand what an MP3 is.

Music which is downloaded from the internet is uploaded in MP3 format. MP3 is a ground-breaking format used in digital audio scenario. This format was developed by pioneers Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and Thompson Multimedia. This invention took place somewhere in the late 1980s and was polished over years to the present form. The format entered the mainstream with the use of internet in the late 1990s.

So what is an MP3? MP3 stands for MPEG, an acronym used for the term Moving Pictures Experts Group. This is an international standard for such a format. Basically, MP3 is nothing but a compacted audio format. This audio format helps make the audio files of smaller size but at the same time allows the audio quality to be the same as one gets in the PCM WAV format. The PCM WAV format is the format which one finds loaded onto CDs which are sold in music stores.

Thompson and Fraunhofer successfully developed an algorithm for coding the music. This coding is done according to some rules which have been predefined by them. The resultant encoded audio file is much smaller in size yet, the quality of the audio is good. The small sized audio file can thus be uploaded and downloaded from the internet very easily.

MP3 have become very popular now a days. This is due to the fact that this format is more practical than audio files in WAV formats. Files in WAV format are of a very large size. To understand more clearly, a WAV audio file is of about 50MB size. Therefore, WAV files cannot be e mailed easily. Nor can they be downloaded quickly. WAV files take a very long time to be downloaded. On the other hand, an MP3 file is of much smaller size. A single audio track is of as small as 3 to 4 MB. Thus the same file gets compressed by about 10 times. If music of MP3 format is loaded on a CD, about a hundred songs can be recorded on a single CD. Also, a large number of music files can be downloaded onto your PC without blocking much hard disk space.
