Patients are advised to keep this medication in its intended container and to keep in a safe place, at room temperature. This protects the capsules from excessive heat, moisture or temperature. Butalbital is a type of barbiturates, and the effect is the relaxation of muscle contractions. Lastly, there is caffeine. This is a stimulant drug that affects the central nervous system. Caffeine causes muscle contractions in blood vessels to improve blood flow. Caffeine is a common and some say a beneficial drug when taken in moderation. Acetaminophen is a common drug sold over-the-counter. Butalbital is the only exception, and hence, a doctor must prescribe this medication, which combines all three drugs.

This medication known as Fioricet can be prescribed to treat tension headaches, because these tension headaches are commonly caused by muscle contractions. If you have been experiencing severe tension headaches as of late, and the old relaxing routine doesn't seem to help, then ask your doctor about a prescription. He will ask you questions about your lifestyle and any other drugs you are currently taking. However, if you have severe pain that can only be alleviated by medication, he will probably write you a prescription right away.

This is not a pill to be taken for a long-term period of time. However, for a short-term basis, the patient can feel an alleviation of severe headache pain.
