What is the Human Hapillomavirus

The HPV virus or the Human Papilloma virus is a group of more than hundred different kinds of viruses. These viruses can cause warts on the hands and feet and some of them cause warts in the genital areas and cervical cancer. The HPV that cause genital warts is transmitted though sexual contact and has over 30 varieties. If you are one of those people who have sex frequently, then you should be aware about the HPV and its prevention.

A few of the strains of HPV are capable of causing genital warts while a few of them cause pre-cancerous changes in the cancer that leads on to cervical cancer. The virus can have damaging effects on the vulva, vagina and anus in females and in the anus and penis in males. Half of the sexually active women suffer from HPV infection. This is spread by direct skin to skin contact of the genitals or by oral sex with an infected person. Thus, the use of condoms is a preventive measure but the HPV can still be spread if the infection is present in an area that is not covered by the condom. In some rare cases, the HPV is transmitted from the mother to her baby during delivery.

When a person contracts the HPV, how generally may not know it as the infected area remains completely normal and does not show any noticeable changes. The infection may be transmitted t another person without the knowledge of it even being present in the first place. After the infection is transmitted to another person, the body clears off the infection. Some people may see bumps called warts in the genital areas. These bumps are non-cancerous.

At times, there may be significant changes in the cervical cells that results in an abnormal Pap test. In teenagers, the Pap test becomes normal over several years. When the HPV is unable to clear and persists in the cervix, it may lead to cervical cancer. This is why doctors usually advise regular testing once a person is infected with the HPV. Some people are at a greater risk of getting the HPV if he or she has had sexual contact at an early age or if he or she has had multiple sexual partners or either of the partners or the person himself has had a history of sexually transmitted diseases or either of her or his sexual partners does not use a condom.

At times, the detection of genital warts is hard as they are very small and are hard to see. Besides, an infected person does not experience any sort of pain or itching or bleeding due to these genital warts. They can be tested with a Pap test. The genital warts can be raised or flat or small or large. There may be one wart or many warts. The warts may look red, brown, pink or flesh-colored. Genital warts can be treated with acid medicines, creams or laser therapy. This treatment removes nay visible warts and itchiness. The treatment given by a doctor depends on the number, size and location of the genital warts.
