What is the Link Between Botox and Botulism?

Botulism is rare - it causes paralysis, and is potentially fatal.

So says a report in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

What is the Link between Botox and Botulism?

Botulism is caused by botulinum A bacteria. Botox and Botulism are linked because a small amount of the botulinum A is used in the making of Botox.

Botox is said to be safe if it is prepared properly and under license and administered in the correct dose, and by someone who has been trained.

But when it is unlicensed, untested and acquired dubiously, it can be dangerous and life threatening.

It needs to be said quite clearly that the following incident is not linked to Botox.

In November 2004 four people in Florida received unlicensed highly concentrated injections to the face, of a botulinum toxin product at a Florida Clinic.

As we have already said, Botox is a diluted form of botulinum, but what these people were given had not been treated, or tested and was labeled, for research use only'- they had been put in grave danger.

So What Went Wrong

The researchers who were given the task of finding out what went so seriously wrong, found that staff at the Florida Clinic had somehow got hold of this toxin before it had been diluted, tested and licensed. Wondering how they could make use of it, they tried to dilute it themselves, and got the amount wrong.

Researchers did not make it clear how the staff got hold of the toxin in the first place, only that it could have been stolen before being offered to the staff at the clinic.

A doctor at the clinic went on to give three people then himself, between four to six injections of the diluted substance, for cosmetic reasons, (lines and wrinkles)

All of the four people concerned were hospitalized a few days after receiving their treatments.

Their symptoms included: progressive weakness, cranial neuropathies, which is abnormality of certain nerves in the face and neck that control functions including sensation, facial muscle movement, and swallowing. Two of the four also had breathing problems.

All four spent a long time in hospital, and where lucky to survive.

Botox is a very weak form of the botulinum toxin and every batch is first tested on mice using the LD50 test, ( LD50 refers to the dose of toxic substance required to kill 50% of those animals tested) before being licensed and then and only then, it is considered safe to be used on humans, for cosmetic or medical reasons.

Only mice are used for the testing of Botox, and between 6,000,000 to 7,000,000 mice die each year. Most of them for our vanity, but not all.

Even thoughBotox contains only asmall amount of the botulism bacteria, is it stillsafe to use? There are still incidents happening to people which prove thatBotox is still not completely safe, regardless of what those in the industry say, even when it is used, and administered correctly.

Millions of injections of Botox are prescribed every year, mainly to temporally reduce lines and wrinkles on the face. But some people have suffered nasty side effects not unlike those mentioned here.

There have been, and continue to be many stories told by people who have suffered serious side-effects after having a Botox treatment, I know, because have heard of, and written about some of these unfortunate people.

There is a huge lesson we can learn from all of this:

1. If you are considering using Botox see your own doctor first, and discuss any worries you have regarding side effects.

2. Make sure you go to a clinic that has a good reputation. Ask them for references from people who are regular patients, also ask to see any before and after photographs they may have.

3. Botox is a prescription drug so you will need to see a doctor at the clinic first, even though it may be a nurse, who gives you your injections.

4. The doctor should ask you if you have any allergies or other specific illnesses which may stop you having a treatment.

5. Ask the doctor which company supplies the Botox, and for how long has the clinic been supplied by them.

6. Ask about any or all of the side-effects related to your treatment.

7. Ask for details of what is your best cause of action, if anything goes wrong.

8. Write down all the questions you want to ask. If you are a bit anxious it is easy to forget something important.

A good clinic will be able to answer all your questions and put your mind at rest, but if you are still uncertain, go away and think it overfor a while longer.

The majority of men and women use Botox for cosmetic reasons, but there are other uses for Botox that have recently been discovered like; migraine headaches, sweaty hands and armpits, and more, and I am sure there will be many more to come.

Remember, Botox is not a permanent answer to losing lines and wrinkles from your face. A treatment can last between two six months, so you will need a steady stream of cash for further treatments.

Many younger people think that having Botox while they are young will stop wrinkles from forming in the future. That is wrong. As a doctor once said "there needs to be a wrinkle present toinject, and if doctors are injecting young people without wrinkles, and telling them that it is a prevenative measure, they are seriously out of line."

Used regularly, only ageLOC will stop wrinkles forming into the future. Alsoit will reduce them, and prevent them from worsening for us more mature folk. http://www.agelessathome.co.nz

It is ironic after all I have said about using a top clinic with a good reputation, that those unfortunate people who used the Florida Clinic thought they were doing just that, and they probably were. It was just human frailty that let them down. Sad to say all the questions in the world would not have stopped what happened to them.

Well maybe just one: are your employees trustworthy.
