Your pool's filter removes dirt particles from the pool the ones that make the water cloudy. There are several different kinds of pool filters from which to choose:
Sand filters they are least efficient of all of the pool filters but they re also the cheapest. Sand filters are large tanks that hold hundreds of pounds of special pool sand. The dirty water filters through the sand and the sand snags the dirt. Sand filters remove dirt particles down to 20-25 microns much larger than the diatomaceous earth filters. Sand filters keep most pools clean enough, though maintenance can be tiresome as they need to be cleaned about once a week and have to backwashed. Sand filters are not good choices in areas of the country where water restrictions are in place as backwashing uses a lot of water.
Diatomaceous earth filters diatomaceous earth is a powder made up of billions of fossilized plankton skeletons. The inner workings of a diatomaceous earth filter holds cartridges coated with it. The cartridges work well to catch and hold the dirt. They are the most expensive type of filter but they get the water cleaner than other types of filters and catch particles as small as 3-5 microns. Maintenance of a diatomaceous filter is demanding and requires backwashing but sometimes this isn't enough to get them clean. At times you will have to remove the grids and toss the used earth. Check with your municipality, because some towns consider diatomaceous earth to be hazardous waste which means it cannot be simply discarded.
Cartridge filters With a cartridge filter, a tank holds three or four cylindrical cartridges and each cartridge is made up of fabric that catches the tiny particles of dirt and holds onto them until you clean the filter. A cartridge filter can handle dirt as small as 5-10 microns in size. Cartridge filters are less expensive than diatomaceous filters but more than sand filters. The cartridge filters require little maintenance other than hosing them off a few times during the swim season.
No matter which filter you ultimately choose, make sure you perform regular maintenance on it to keep it working properly and your pool clean so the family can get all of the enjoyment out of it that you can!
