What on earth is a blog?
Just what is a blog used for?
Just what is a blog used for?
All of us know that the earth is perpetually besieged by charged rays usually referred to as "cosmic rays" from the cosmos. What you are probably only subconsciously aware of is that over the last decade or more, you have been assaulted by a very new man-made kind of blast the B word barrage.
The B word barrage originates from that part of the cosmos known as the blogosphere and blitzes earth at an intensity of several million hits daily. Somewhere in the back of your mind, you do know that this storm is blitzing you, but you have become so used to it you barely think about it, unless you live in the world of the internet.
As of December 2009, over 130 million blogs had been indexed by Technorati, a search engine that began searching for and indexing blogs in 2002.
That tell you something? Even taking into account bloggers who run more than one blog, tens of millions of this planet's denizens are expending (in all likelihood) a substantial bit of time, (almost surely a great deal of) energy and (very likely quite a bit of) money on putting up blog posts and maintaining them: something that necessitates constantly cramming in new text, audio, video and graphic content. Daily.
And they are doing so because hundreds of millions of earthlings go through those posts, ingesting the messages that are communicated in all that text, audio, video and graphic content. Daily. So there: that's one answer to just what is a blog used for.
So how do we explain this lunacy? What actually is a blog, what is blogging all about?
I choose to define blogging in this way: It is an avenue for articulating your feelings, experience, emotions, opinions and advice on any issue you feel like verbalizing on, in any form you opt for through a variety of media (text, audio, video, graphics), using a technically undemanding medium that mandates no specialized skills to put up and has the potential to reach out to every single perceptive human being on this planet or any other planet with perceptive beings. Blogging also allows you to get responses from your readers, viewers and listeners and do what you want with them: take no notice of them, eliminate them or feed them and set off outbursts of two-sided or potentially unlimited multi-sided communication. Another pointer to just what is a blog used for.
And there is an added benefit: you can make moolah if you are a blogger. Quite a bit of money, if you have a blog with notable traffic volumes. This, depending on your viewpoint, is possibly the most important answer to just what is a blog used for.
My definition may or may not make an impression on you. As someone recently beset with the blogging virus, I am probably prejudiced, and thus, my definition is not the final say in anything.
You can read through some more formal definitions of what exactly is a blog, what is blogging, what are bloggers and
