What to Consider When Buying Westies by:Richard Cussons

Many people are probably familiar with westies

, a breed of dog that is known for its white coat. Though they were originally bred to seek and dig out foxes, badger and other vermin, these small-sized dogs are now mostly companion dogs. Those who are planning to get a dog, more particularly a westie, must get to know the nature and characteristics of the breed first before finally buying or adopting.

Potential westie owners must consider:

Cost. This is very important when considering of getting a new member of the family. Apart from the fact that a puppy can cost much, the list of the things a puppy needs goes on and on. From the most important things such as dog food, food/water bowl, leash, collar and dog beds to the not-so-important ones, it is the owner's responsibility to provide these things. Regular vet visits, vaccinations and grooming must also be considered. And when the dog gets sick, vet bills and medication can mount quickly and may even go beyond your budget.

Time. Many people often take this for granted thinking that owning a dog only requires once a day feeding and occasional grooming. Dog ownership is not just that. Constant supervision will be needed during the puppy's first few days at home. Training, especially potty training, must immediately start to prevent accidents in the house. Exercise, daily walks and on some breeds, daily brushing must also be done to ensure the pet's well-being. If you do not have much time to spare for these furry creatures, then you may need to reassess your decision.

Lifestyle. One reason of the rapid increase of abandoned dogs is lifestyle incompatibility. It's either the dog is too active for them or cannot keep up with their active lifestyle. If you want a house and travel companion, vermin hunter and petite yet courageous watchdog, you will never regret having westies. Westies are very active indoors and will do okay even without a yard so that is something you may want to consider. If you are planning of having a herding or working dog, better consider other breeds such as border collies.

Once you understand what it is to have a westie and know that you are capable of becoming a responsible westie owner, there's no stopping you now. It's time to bring home that creature ready to offer you life-long friendship, love and loyalty.
