What to Do If You Can't Start Your Computer
What to Do If You Can't Start Your Computer
If you discover one day that your computer does not start correctly, then there a number of things you can do to find out the root cause.
Firstly make not of what actually happens when you push the power button as you could save yourself having a computer repair. Do you hear the fans whirring inside before it shuts off, does it not come on at all, are there any beeps etc?
If nothing happens at all, no power, no lights/fans etc, start with the basics, check its plugged in fully (you may have knocked the socket) to the wall AND the back of the PC, just give it a push to make sure it's completely in.
If nothing happens still you will probably have either a blown fuse, which you can test by simply replacing it or using another kettle lead, or your if it's a desktop computer the power supply has probably stopped working, although usually this is preceded by a loud bang as the capacitors fail, it's not always the case.
DO NOT FLICK THE 120/240V rocker switch though on the back of your power supply, otherwise if it's not faulty, it will blow up with a very loud bang.
For Laptop repair, if your laptop is not plugged in, it's best to simply plug it into the power socket to rule out the battery first, either the battery will go over time or the power supply may go but it would be very rare for both to break at the same time.
When you plug in your power supply for your laptop on the majority of laptops an LED lights somewhere on the laptop to indicate its charging, if this does not light it would point to the power supply as being the cause.
If you hear a fan whirring or if briefly bursts into life then you may find you have a failing or failed component or one is loose, if you feel competent to try this out yourself, you could look inside to re-seat memory modules (if you have more than one you can remove one alternately and see if it starts), check that all your cards are in place and that the CPU heat sink is solidly in place.
Also check that there is no excess build-up of dust as this can short components, a quick vacuum with a low powered hoover may help here.
For laptop users through this process is not so easy and we could recommend a Laptop repair.
Finally, should your Laptop or Computer Beep, these beeps can usually tell you what is wrong, consult your motherboard manual where you will find a list of beep codes which will point you in the correct direction.
