1. Untag the photo.

This is the easiest step to take, and the most commonly use one. Photos of you with a double chin, or cozied up to an ex, or appearing visibly intoxicated can be forgotten with the click of the mouse. The person who has posted the photo will certainly not be offended chances are that he or she has untagged plenty of photos over time so there's really no harm in doing this. But the photo will still be on the Internet as long as the poster keeps it there. This means that friends you have in common who are clicking through the photo album its in, or browsing the pictures of someone else tagged in the offending photo will be able to see it. Most likely they will recognize you right away. Anyone who has access to wireless Internet will be able to see it! So if the photo is really a stinker, you may want to consider taking further steps to eliminate it from your life!

2. Consider asking the poster to take it down.

This is an underutilized method. You probably think that the person will be annoyed or offended that you're asking them to delete a picture, but you'll be surprised to learn that very few people care about this sort of thing. Most will sympathize with the acute embarrassment that a bad photo can bring, and will instantly remove it from the album. An email or online message will suffice, something along the lines of.

3. Consider a more serious confrontation with the poster, or reporting the photo.

If your friend refuses to take the photo down, you might want to consider a more serious confrontation with them. If it's simply a photo in which you look fat, you should probably let it go. But say it's a photo that depicts you doing something illegal - such as drinking underage you might want to take the time to talk to them in person or over the phone. Prepare what you're going to say beforehand so that your nervousness doesn't get the best of you. If they still refuse, consider reporting the photo as inappropriate so that the website itself will take it down, although this only works if the photo displays nudity or something obviously illegal like drug use.
