What to Learn From Hollywood About Home Security
Hollywood talks about everything in life, birth
, death, marriage, romance, comedy, and theft. Many movies have depicted families and people experiencing a threat to their home security. Movies like "Home Alone" and "Harry and the Henderson's" are of course fictional, but some key points can also be learned from these movies. Hollywood typically takes a comical spin with movies like these, but there is still a lesson somewhere in the plot and comedy.
"Home Alone" talks about a family off on vacation to Paris. The McAllister's parents along with their supposed five children are headed to Paris to spend the Christmas holiday with relatives. The day before and the morning of trial is hectic to say the least. They lose power and thus sleep in due to a non-functioning alarm clock. They all rush to the airport and barley make it onto the plane. During the flight they've realized they've made two small errors regarding home security. They first acknowledge the fact that they have left the garage door open. The second thing they recall some moments later is that they have also left their youngest son, Kevin, home alone.
The movie essentially plays out every young child's dream, to be left home alone' to roam the house, eat as much ice cream as they want, watch all the dirty movies, and of course have free reign in their siblings rooms and possessions. The main character, Kevin eventually develops a longing and missing for his family and especially his mother. Later he realizes there is a threat to his home security because of two hardened criminals attempted to rob his house, as well as the entire block. In order to protect his home and his family's possessions, Kevin must use his wit as well as his resources to ward off the criminals.
His family never installed a home alarm system, simply put in an automatic lighting system that the father explained to one of the criminals, dressed up as a police officer, at the beginning of the movie. It soon becomes Kevin's sole responsibility to protect his home. He sets up a number of hilarious traps and obstacles throughout the house. Christmas Eve is turned into a night of humor and adventure as little Kevin must battle two grown up criminals. "Home Alone" has become a Christmas classic, incorporating the importance of family during the holidays with the necessity of decent home security.
Another movie taking a humorous stand point about home security is the 80's classic "Harry and the Henderson's". This story tells the infamous tale of the mythological character Bigfoot becoming loved and essentially adopted into a Seattle family. While Home Alone' tells the story of home security from intruders coming from outside the house and attempted to break in, "Harry and the Henderson's" gives the story from the opposite perspective. The Henderson's must protect their home from the destructive nature of Harry, Bigfoot. It's a lovable movie about ignorance regarding nature, the love of a family, and the understanding of the unknown. Both movies taught the American public about protecting your home with regard to home security, but with a humorous and lovable approach that is sure to make both movies classics for years to come.
