What to call them (synthetic??)

First of all, we need to be clear about the product. Synthetic gems have two basic qualities:

-it is an artificial (manmade) material.

-It has essentially the same chemical composition and structure as some natural gem.

The similar compositions and structures produce similar physical, optical, and chemical characteristics. Thus, a synthetic ruby weighs the same as a natural ruby the same size. It affects light in basically the same way, and it reacts to chemicals and heat the same way too. How ever, slight differences in characteristics let gemologists separate synthetics from their natural counterparts. What are the slight differences?

This one-to-one correspondence of manmade and natural makes a true synthetic. Using a material merely to imitate a natural gem does not make it a synthetic, just an imitation.Some manmade materials have no natural counterparts. They do not duplicate the composition and structure of any known natural gem. Technically, although manmade, they are not synthetics.

Several diamond stimulants fall in this category. Not every synthetic are marketed as manmade versions of their own natural counterparts, either. Some are sold as imitations of gems not synthesized commercially. Others imitate stones like emerald, whose synthetic forms are more expensive. The most familiar example is probably imitation birthstone jewelry, usually set with synthetic spinel or synthetic corundum.

Back when synthetics were first introduce to the mass market in the 1940's there was widespread belief among consumers that synthetic meant imitation or fake.

According to synthetics manufacturers marketed their products under names that sounded like those of natural gems; names like Emerita, Igmerald, and Symerald, for synthetic emerald. Others put terms like cultured and created between their own name and the material's Chatham-Created emerald, Gilson-Created opal, and Ramaura Cultured ruby are examples.

If you use a marketing name, you need to explain that you are showing what gemologists call a synthetic. Otherwise, you run the risk of having a competitor. If you are sales personbe the first to tell your customer they bought a synthetic. (Marketing terms may cause confusion) If you are buyer, you need to know more about all these marketing name.
