What to do When You're in Tierra del Fuego
Tierra del Fuego is a vast and wild land, untamed by much human civilization. The temperatures year round are harsh, but the landscape is gorgeous. Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, has become a travel destination for those who wish to explore this seldom-seen Land of Fire, or Tierra del Fuego.
Ushuaia, situated on the shores of the Beagle Channel, has grown significantly in the past few decades, now offering hotels, restaurants, shops, and tours to a booming visitor industry. Nearby to Ushuaia is the Tierra del Fuego National Park, 240 acres of wonderful hikes through mountains, lakes, and streams and beautiful landscapes. There are tons of wildlife, such as red foxes, guanacos, beavers, seals, Magellan penguins, condors, and cormorants.
While you're staying in the bottom of the world, make sure to leave time to enjoy the varied activities and tours available in Ushuaia and in the Tierra del Fuego National Park.
A great way to familiarize yourself with Ushuaia is to take a Ushuaia city tour. A two hour tour will help you get your bearings about the fascinating history of this wild frontier land. You will see the historic center of town, the port, and the hilly streets, then the Museum of the End of the World. This museum is a terrific introduction to Ushuaia, as the guides enjoy storytelling. You can also visit the prison and learn about the convicts who rode the Convict Train to Ushuaia. There also is an informative Maritime Museum.
Another excellent tour (available only from November to March) is the full day tour of the Gable Island Penguin Rockery. Gable Island is the largest island in the Beagle Channel. It is uninhabited, though it once was home to sheepshearers and before them, the native Yamana Indians. Enjoy a hearty breakfast at the old sheepshearer ranch. Then take a two hour hike to the other side of the island, the side exposed to the Beagle Channel. Along the way, you will see native settlements, and birdlife such as gulls, steamer ducks, petrels, cormorants, albatrosses, and Magellan Penguin. After lunch, you will continue the cruise to Martillo Island, where a large colony of Magellan Penguins dwell. You will visit Harberton Ranch, which originally belonged to British missionaries.
Another really cool tour to do while in the Tierra del Fuego region is the Tierra Mayor dog sled and snowshoe trek. This is a five hour, moderately challenging snow adventure that is available June to September. From Ushuaia, you will be transferred to Tierra Mayor, the trailhead where you will get outfitted for your dog sled excursion. You'll be pulled by a pack of Huskies along old logging trails until you reach the woodcutter's shelter, where you can rest and warm up. Then you'll gear up in snow shoes for the one and a half hour snowshoe trek to the hills of Tierra Mayor until you arrive at the Alvear icefalls. Then you'll return to the shelter, warm up, and descend down the logging trails on snowshoes until you reach the trailhead. Then you will transfer back to Ushuaia.
