What to do When you are Traveling in Buenos Aires

What to do When you are Traveling in Buenos Aires

The capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires, is a beautiful, vibrant city where the hospitable people, romantic tango dancers, delicious barbeque lamb, tasty empanadas, spectacular wine, and gorgeous landscape are sure to win your heart. If you are planning on traveling to Buenos Aires, you will want to spend at least two days in the city, and a few days more if you want to see the breathtaking surrounding landscape. But to enjoy this city and all that it has to offer, you will want to stay in Buenos Aires for at least a week.

Fly into the Buenos Aires airport to begin your Buenos Aires vacation. Transfer to your Buenos Aires hotel. In the evening, stroll the streets downtown, looking for a caf to enjoy a delicious carne or pollo empanada and a glass of mate, or dine in a restaurant that serves traditional Argentinean barbeque lamb, and make sure to wash it down with a glass of fine Argentinean wine, as Argentina is world-famous for its wine.

The next morning, enjoy breakfast in your hotel before heading out on a Buenos Aires city tour. In the downtown civic district, visit the National Congress, or Parliament building, the Plaza de Mayo, the Government House (called the Casa Rosada), the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the colonial-era city hall (called the Cabildo). Then, walk down the 9 de Julio street to visit the Colon Theatre, a famous opera house.

Next, visit the neighborhoods of San Telmo, La Boca, Puerto Madero, Retiro, Palermo, and Recoleta. Each of these Buenos Aires districts features unique, colorful architecture, lively markets, boutiques, and sidewalk cafes. In Palermo, you can visit the Buenos Aires Zoo and planetarium.

In the evening, enjoy a portea, a traditional Argentinean dinner and tango show. The Esquina Carlos Gardel, located in the Abasto neighborhood of Buenos Aires, is one of the best tango houses in the city. The famous Argentinean singer Carlos Gardel lived and performed in Abasto for many years.

Buenos Aires's residents love futbol, or soccer, and a Buenos Aires tour would be incomplete without a visit to the famous La Bombonera stadium.

Another terrific way to experience Buenos Aires, if you have a few more days to spare, is to take a tour of Tigre, a town on the Tigre river delta just north of Buenos Aires. Tigre is where the Buenos Aires elite lived during the 19th century. The mansions are only accessible by boat. The Presidential Olivos residence, the San Isidro Cathedral, and the Tigre river delta are especially worth visiting.

Also consider taking a biking tour of Buenos Aires. The city is flat and easy to navigate by bike. You can visit all the neighborhoods, or you can bike to the estancias on the pampas just outside of the city, or head north to the Tigre river delta.
