What to do if Poas Volcano's crater is not visible

Poas Volcano is a huge attraction just outside the central valley city of Alajuela and just 45 minutes drive from SJo airport. Certainly an excellent first night stop on your Costa Rican vacation.

Because Poas boasts an elevation of over 8000ft it is often covered in cloud making it difficult or impossible to see the crater, especially if you arrive later than 9am.

However, there are many other things to keep you busy in the area such as the La Paz waterfall gardens just 10 miles away int he direction of Vara Blanca. These amazing waterfalls are set in a park like atmosphere with exhibits of the countries most appealing wildlife set at arms length from the viewer.

Colinas Del Poas in the town of Poasito has one of the best maitained zip line tours in the country and also offers team building activities, trout fishing and beautiful gardens.

Doka coffee Plantation offers several informative tours per day and it is conveniently located half way between Alajuela and Poas. No need to book, just be sure to show up at least 15 minutes before the scheduled tour.

If you arrive to a cloudy and invisible Poas Volcano be sure to spend some time in the park to give the weather some time to clear, take a walk to Botos lagoon and then go back the main crater to see if it is visible.

The only way to give yourself the best chance of seeing Poas is to stay in the area and arrive at the park very early, it opens at 8am. Try staying at one of the Poas Volcano summit lodges, Poas Lodge is especially charming and offers some of the best views in Costa Rica.

Staying at one of the area lodges gives you the possibility of making a quick dash back up to the park if you see the weather clearing.

Another popular pass time is bird watching and Poas Volcano area has an amazing variety of birds to be seen, even the elusive quetzal calls Poas it's home. For an extensive list of birds spotted at and around Poas

Although the Poas area is mostly agricultural land, there are a few walking paths that are outside the national park. It is best to ask at the local tourism office or.one of the lodges.

A day or 2 at Poas Volcano is an excellent way to begin or end your trip to Costa Rica, it is beautiful, accessible by good roads, enjoys a cooler climate and is just a short drive to the city and airport. All in all an excellent destination.
