Here is what great about this machine, as well as some drawbacks, so you can decide if this shredder is right for you. What's great: The SC170 has a pretty good shredding capacity, especially for a smaller machine. As mentioned above, it can shred up to 12 sheets of paper per pass (both letter- and legal-sized) and it will also destroy credit and debit cards, if necessary. The cutting head can even handle staples and paper clips so you won't need to remove them from your documents before shredding. There is a 5.5-gallon wastebasket to store your waste before disposing of it. A window will allow you to peek inside and see if the wastebasket needs to be emptied. The shredder has a built-in handle which makes it easy to get rid of your waste. GBC has designed this product so that it has a uniquely angled head, making the unit very ergonomically friendly. The head allows you to store the shredder under a table or desk and still be able to feed documents into it without leaving the comfort of your chair. The SC170 has automatic on/off and reverse features, as well as a lock to prevent authorized use from occurring. The automatic reverse will greatly reduce the number of jams you experience, and the motor won't burn out thanks to the machine being able to shut itself down. Meanwhile, the lock makes this machine safe to use even in environments where unsupervised children or pets may be present. This machine is affordable and is available for $129.99. It has a great warranty that will provide you with two years of limited coverage on parts and labor, plus five years of protection on the cutting head. What's not so great: This machine was designed for personal use, so it almost goes without saying that this product isn't recommended for high-volume shredding by multiple people. This is a strip-cut device so it doesn't offer the same amount of security as it would if it were a cross-cut model. So while you shouldn't shred highly classified documents with the SC170, shredding everyday paperwork (bills, correspondence, etc.) is perfectly fine. The strips will measure 1/4" across. There isn't a separate feed opening for credit cards, so paper and plastic waste will be mixed together. Also, the SC170 isn't able to destroy electronic media such as CD's. Although the angled head makes this device easy to use, some people may not like the appearance of it. Some people might find the $129.99 price a little too steep, especially during the holiday season. (And in a recession, to boot.) However, the price is justified given that the machine carries the GBC name and is also well-built and durable. Overall, the GBC ShredMaster SC170 is ideal if you want a personal paper shredder that's ergonomically friendly and has a good shredding capacity.
