What's In Your Barbecue Sauce?
All over America, and all over the globe, people love to grill their food over open fires in the great outdoors
. Some cook over propane, other stay with the charcoal, and some use mesquite to give their food that added smoky flavor. Techniques on grilling are equally as diverse, with some advocates demanding that slow cooking is the only way to maintain a savory and juicy cut of meat, while others prefer the scorching with two quick flips as their method of preparation. No matter how anyone cooks, however, the barbecue sauce they choose comes in so many varieties and flavors that there are probably more variations to the sauce than there are people.
If you are using a store bought barbecue sauce or marinade, the selections and options in some stores can be immense. From your basic hickory smoke or brown sugar sauces to more exotic things like Jamaican jerk sauces or Hawaiian pineapple varieties, there usually is something that will please even the most selective tastes. Sometimes people become brand loyal, and will not venture too far from the one they know is their favorite, while others will always be looking for something new to experiment with.
Many people like to create their own secret recipes, and the barbecue sauce genre is no exception. Some like to chop up a hot chili in their sauce to give it that Tex-Mex feel. Others might go with the heavy garlic for those who absolutely love their garlic on everything. It has been established that you can mix and match just about anything to create an award winning grilling sauce, and have even heard of grape jelly in one sauce as well as things like papaya juice, guava nectar, and more traditional ideas like honey, molasses, brown sugar, and ketchup.
While the ingredients of the sauce can be wide open, so can the spices and herbs used to flavor that secret barbecue sauce. Cumin, paprika, any type of pepper imaginable, and less common things have been added to some sauces such as allspice, basil, coriander, and oregano. It seems nothing is out of the question when trying to concoct the new great grilling sauce.
Ultimately, if you like the taste of it on your grilled meat, have fun and put together that signature barbecue sauce that is uniquely your own. You can even start with a store bought variety and spice it up how you prefer. Jalapenos or sesame seeds, paprika or basil, they can all become your secret weapon in creating your legendary status as grill master.
