What's Oem?

If you didnt know, like I didnt, OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer

, but is also known as Factory Original when it comes to Automobile parts, Bicycle parts, & even Technology Parts. OEM makes reference to the company / organization that originally manufactured the merchandise that consumers are buying. Are you ready for an example? Okay, so say you bought a Toyota Camry, the Toyota Camry Rims on your vehicle are considered to be Factory Original. Why? Because you bought it from the dealership & anything from the dealership is OEM / Factory Original.

In an automotive business, like a wheel shop, the people who own the actual business usually buy OEM products by the bulk so they can get it for cheap & sell it for a little more than usual since they are Factory Original. The reason for this is because people arent going to want Imitations on their vehicle, bikes, or their expensive electronic equipment.

Almost always, businesses who purchase OEM parts usually put their own little twist on them before selling them. This is called VAR (Value Added Reseller). A VAR can consist of anything that will improve the OEM part that they are going to sell. This allows for the item to be worth more; hence, making the business more competitive in their industry & letting them make more profit on the OEM part that is sold.

One disadvantage with OEM parts is that they tend to have shorter warranties. I bet you can guess why; if not, Im still going to tell you. Okay, lets say you buy a laptop from HP (Hewlett-Packard) & the warranty is only for two years. Usually, they are only two years for a reason; once the two years are up, HP knows that the laptop is going to mess up, which is going to lead you to buy another one. The consumer is going to know that HP was there when the laptop had glitches, which is going to persuade you to buy another laptop from the same company. Therefore, thats how they make their money; and what a coincidence that all of the parts were OEM, which made it more expensive. When it comes to the Automotive World, its the same thing. Second hand stores are going to buy OEM Vehicle stuff & either sell them for cheaper or more expensive than the dealership. It will be cheaper if there are some minor scratches or minor blemishes on them & more expensive if they are in Brand New condition.

One major benefit about OEM parts that you probably didnt know is that they are more environment friendly to make than Aftermarket parts (Aftermarket parts are the ones that imitate OEM pieces & also have no logo / emblem). They are, obviously, a great value for a person to have if they ever decide on selling it later in the future. The only thing is that when manufacturers decide to stop making that specific OEM product one rainy day, youll most likely have no where else to get it. Even if you did find it, it wont be cheap.

Either way, your best bet would probably be to go with an OEM / Factory Original part only because they are more reliable than Aftermarket, they are without a doubt better looking, and will most likely last you longer than you expect.
