What's The Best Blog Software To Use?

If you are new to blogging, you may have some confusion as to which is the best blog software to get you started

. You know, or have heard, that blogging can be a fun and useful endeavor, but that's where the guidance has ended. Left out were the parts about just what to do, what is possible, costs and useful tips that can make the blogging experience so much easier and efficient. Let's examine what I feel is the best blog software out there, and why you'd want to give it a whirl.

There are many types of blogging platforms out there, many free, several paid. The free ones range from a simple blog on a hosted site, like Blogspot.com (owned by Google) Weebly, Tripod and LiveJournal, to name a few of the more prominent ones; to blogs hosted on your own domain, and these can run the gamut from free, like WordPress, to paid blog software like MoveableType and TypePad.

The advantages of the free hosted blog platforms are that they are free, hosted for you, and are usually very easy to set up. You can have it up and online in minutes. Some of the disadvantages are that it's harder to monetize your blog, and you're stuck with much of what they give you.

Hosting a blog on your own domain requires a bit more expense, but gives you the advantage of total flexibility and freedom to do as you choose. One disadvantage is that there is a bit more of a learning curve.

Determine your goals before making this decision. Is this blog for personal use, an informational blog, or a marketing blog used to either make sales, collect leads of opt-in, or to direct visitors to affiliate offers? There is a distinct difference in each of these, and your decision will be made in part by the flexibility offered by these different blogging platforms.

At this time I feel that the free blogging software offered by WordPress is the best for most purposes. It is very easy to install, has a wealth of useful plugins that can help you achieve almost anything you need to on your blog, and is frequently updated. There are many free or paid "themes", which are your blog templates and can be customized to nearly any look you desire. This is not the WordPress.com version we are talking about here, but the actual WordPress blog software you download to your own domain. You obviously need a hosting account, and many now offer a WordPress install with a few clicks.

WordPress offers the best opportunity for you to get a good looking, self-hosted blog up on the Web in a very short amount of time. You can do so many things with it without having to suffer through a grueling learning curve, and your blog can be a valuable addition to your business or pleasure. WordPress is the best choice out there at the moment. Give it a try, and you'll be glad you did.
