Whats The Deal With Condensing Boilers?
Condensing boilers can be found in around 70% of homes in the UK
. The reason they are so popular is because they are simply the best boilers if you want an efficient heating and water system. The reason they are so efficient is because they are designed in such a way to use fuel more economically. There is very little fuel/heat loss with new condensing boilers compared to boilers made years ago. The design is clever because they recycle any waste gases back into heating your home and water. With non-condensing boilers wasted gases are ejected out of the flue which is like a chimney to an extent. This makes your fuel bills higher. Why throw it away when it can be caught and reused back into heat. It makes perfect sense which is why they are the top selling boilers.
The science behind the design of new boilers is heads and shoulders above the technology used only a few years ago. All new boilers are rated according to their efficiency in converting fuel to heat. This rating is known as SEDBUK which stands for seasonal efficiency of domestic boilers in the UK. So when buying a new boiler it will be rated with a letter. Modern condensing boilers are classed as 'A' rated, which means they are the most efficient and economical. In percentages terms A rated is 90% or above and at the lower end of the scales is Band G which is only 70% economical.
There are two types of condensing boilers, the combination boiler or the system boiler. Choosing the right type is important and it depends on a number of factors.
The combination boiler or combi boiler as they are more commonly known are called this because they provide instant hot water as well as heating your radiators or under floor heating. These are more suited to smaller homes where there is only one bathroom. If you have two bathrooms you couldnt run two shows or run two baths at the same time. One main bathroom and a downstairs toilet is fine though. The great thing about them is that they dont require you to store water in your home, they heat the water as you poor it. This is great when space is an issue. The actual boiler is quite small about the six of a medium sized suitcase and they can go in a cupboard hung up or standing.
System boilers, also called open vent condensing boilers do provide hot water and heat radiators but there is the need for hot water tank. Larger houses with more than one bathroom would need this type of boiler. The water tank is easily tucked away in a cupboard, which isnt generally a problem for larger homes, then obviously the space for the boiler itself which again isnt very large at all and can be standing or wall mounted.
If youre worried about choosing the wrong boiler talk to a qualified installer as they will be able to advise you on which type is best suited for your home.
